Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
After substantial weight loss, weight gain or simply from the effects of aging, skin on the upper arms can become inelastic, loose and flabby. The arm lift also called "Brachioplasty," is used to reduce the excessive fat and skin from your upper arm region. Fat pockets that are localize in this region may be reduced by this procedure in combination with liposuction techniques. An arm lift cannot help strenghten weakened muscles of the upper arm, but it can improve it's shape and tone. The procedure takes one to two hours under general anesthesia or with intravenous sedation.
The Arm Lift Procedure
At the start of the procedure you will be given either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, based on your doctor's recommendation. An incision will then be made generally either in the inside of the arm or on the back of the arm. The incision may extend from the underarm to just above the elbow. The length and pattern of the incision depends on where the excess fat is located to be removed. If fat needs to be reduced during the procedure, it will be done with liposuction. At the end of the procedure the supportive tissue is tightened and reshaped. Then the skin is smoothed over the new shape of your arm. The incisions will be closed with absorbable sutures or stitches that will be removed within 1-2 weeks.
Risks of Arm Lifts
As with any surgical procedure there are many risks. Some of the risks and potential complications from arm lifts are:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Blood clots
- Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
- Skin loss
- Unfavorable scarring
- etc.
Recovery
After surgery dressings or bandages may be applied to your incisions and your arms may be wrapped to minimize any swelling. A small, tiny tube may be placed under the skin temporarily to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect. You will also be given instructions for caring for the area affected in order for it to heal and prevent infection.
Results from Arm Lifts
The results of an arm lift are long-lasting. You will immediately see results after the procedure, in which your arm will appear more toned and newly shaped, although initial results will be somewhat unapparent by swelling and bruising.
